We are honored to have the Oyster Shucking Shed and Lunch Room receive a 2021 District of Columbia Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation from the DC Preservation League! The Historic Lunch Room and Oyster Shed are set amidst the large-scale improvements at the Washington Fish Market site at The Wharf—a complex project that includes 5 new structures adjacent to the Lunch Room and Oyster Shed, which are the only remaining buildings from a 1916 iteration of this site, which began operations in 1805. In restoring the Lunch Room and Oyster Shed—the two remaining reminders of DC’s early-twentieth century Municipal Fish Market; the oldest continually operating open-air fish market in the U.S.—our goal was to maintain these historic structures to create a unique, storied area that would function as the centerpiece of the renewed Fish Market. We’re thrilled to have this award recognize our efforts to respectfully breathe new life into these structures.
Congratulations to the entire team and to our project partners including MC Engineers, Inc., EHT Traceries Inc, The Phoenix Restoration Group, Inc., Hoffman & Associates, and Madison Marquette.
