We are happy to have our deep commitment to Montessori education outlined in a new article authored by Principal David C. Bagnoli, AIA. In the article we describe how the Montessori Method can be expressed in the physical environment, and the ways design can encourage children to become self-reliant and independent. We look at design considerations related to arriving at school, the Montessori classroom, and engaging with nature, with suggestions and best practices that range from the comprehensive and substantive to inexpensive, easy updates that can also be effective in helping schools strengthen their expression of Montessori principles. And while the focus of the article is, of course, on children’s educational experience, it also discusses the needs of adult users and the wider school community.
While the Montessori Life article is only available to American Montessori Society members, you can find other information David has prepared about designing for Montessori on the National Center for Montessori in the Public Sector website. PDF copies of the article available upon request, just shoot us an email or give us a call!
